§ 5d Cello

General Information:

  • The chairman will terminate any presentation exceeding the given time frame.
  • Please choose repeats in your own responsibility. The maximum duration of each round must not be exceeded.
  • Please provide the jury with copies of the sheet music chosen for the first round of contemporary music.
  • Good pianists are made available by the organizer but can also be brought along by the candidate (at their own cost).
  • Please prepare an attractive piece with a maximum duration of 4-5 minutes for the prize winners' concert. Choose from the theme "folk music (dance music)", if possible in connection with your home. For suggestions, see § 2.

A) First Round:

  1. Prelude from either the 4th, 5th, or 6th suite by J. S. Bach.
  2. One caprice by A. Piatti or one etude by D. Popper (“Hohe Schule des Violoncellospiels”).
  3. A short contemporary piece (or parts of such a piece) for Violincello solo with a duration of max. 6 minutes, e.g.
    Witold LUTOSLAWSKI, Sacher Variation
    Luciano BERIO, Les mots sont allés
    Henri DUTILLEUX, from 3 Strophes sur le nom de Sacher
    Cristobal HALFFTER, Variationen über das Thema Sacher
    Krzysztof PENDERECKI, Per Slava
    Bernd Alois ZIMMERMANN, 4 kurze Studien
    or another contemporary piece of comparable difficulty.

Duration: 15 minutes.
All pieces of the first round have to be performed from memory.


B) Second Round:

  1. One of the sonatas by J. Brahms (op. 38, E minor or op. 99, F major) - complete piece.
  2. “Arpeggione Sonata” by F. Schubert - complete piece.

Duration: max. 35 minutes.
Second Round: Sonata can be performed with notes.
Note: The jury reserves the right to limit your performance to a selection of movements. This will be announced immediately prior to your performance.


C) Final with full orchestra:

Choose from the following cello concerts:

a) J. Haydn, Concerto No. 2 in D Major for cello and orchestra, Hob. VIIb/2, op. 101, 1st movement
b) A. Dvořák, Cello Concerto, B minor, op. 104, 1st movement
c) P. I. Tschaikowsky, Variations on a Rococo theme, A major op.33, complete piece

Concerts have to be performed from memory.
